Barnstaple laboratory

This Special School in Barnstaple required a new teaching laboratory to be able to deliver key elements of the exam curriculum together with internal remodelling to provide improved lavatory facilities and storage.

During an on site briefing to discuss the budget and spacial paramaters it became clear that with some joined-up thinking the new building could also provide a much needed store and workshop below the lab for very little additional cost.

Our client wanted something that differed from the existing building and from a number of initial designs selected a curved, vaulted roof structure.

This picture shows the steel frame incorporatinga ring beam at the eaves.

The structure with the masonry on the way up.

The exposed glulaminted timber beams and support structure.

External works included new car park, stepped and ramped access in compliance with thw Disability Discrimination Act legislation, new cycle storage and planting.
